Go Green Rally flag off

The lions contingent starting from Kuching were flagged off at Lions Nursing Home on 11.11.2011 @ 7am. Their first stop was at Serian before continuing to Sibu, Bintulu and ending in Miri. Simultaneously, Lions from Sabah made their way down to Miri for the grand fellowship on 12.11.2011.

As part of the Go Green Rally, our club organised an old news paper collection for recycling purposes. Lions from Region 1 brought their old newspaper to MJC on 11.11.2011. The club with the highest amount of newspaper collected was awarded with a token prize.

Go Green Rally - Tree planting phase 2

Council Chairperson, DG, IPD, Padawan Councilor, lion dignitaries, lions, leos, friends, members of Padawan council and SFC unveiling the commemorative plaque.

250 trees were planted on 10.11.2011. Making a total of 500 trees planted at MJC recreation ground. During his speech, DG announced that Region 1 has more than met the target of 1 Lion, 1 tree by 3 times. Go Lions! We believe that Lions boleh!

Kampung Mentong Merau is a Bidayuh kampung located some 72km away from Kuching and has a population of about 1,000 people. In the vicinity, there is a primary school with about 30 students from Primary 1-6.

The Lions in Region 1 assisted by Leos made their way to this kampung on this day for a community service project which includes health screening, dental check and tooth extraction, vision screening, distribution of toothbrushes, toothpastes, multivitamins and deworming tablets, school bags and story books to school children and also tree planting.

Region 1 Tree Planting Project

Caring for our environment...yes, by planting trees and that is what we did this morning. A total of 100 trees were planted by Lions and Leos in Region 1 today with the remaining ones to be planted in batches at a later time. Our club managed to plant 16 trees. Yeah! More trees to plant we hope. Together, let's save the earth!

Adopt-a-school 2011: Phase 2 - SK Semban School trip to Kuching

In Phase 1 of this project, we visited SK Semban in May 2011 to send them some much needed supplies. You can read more about the trip here, here and here.

Under Phase 2, our Club together with Batik Boutique Hotel arranged for a 3 days, 2 nights school trip to Kuching for 18 of students from SK Semban - ranging from Primary 3 to 6 - from 21-23.9.2011. It was a fun-filled and educational trip full of 'first's for the kids. For many of them, it was their first trip to Kuching, first beach outing, first cinema movie, first ice-cream and more.

This school trip, would not have been possible without the help and support of many, many kind people. Their generosity with their time, resources and money has gone over and beyond what we could imagine. We would like to take this opportunity to thank:-

Pusat Khidmat Masyarakat DUN Bengoh, YB Dr Jerip Susil, Sarawak Forestry, Tuan Haji Ali Yusop, Lodge School Alumni Association, Anglican Church Diocese of Kuching, The Tarot Chain, Ipoh Town Kopitiam, H.I.P, Super Champs, Dr. Charles Leh, tHe Spring management , Joanna Ling and MPH, Wondertoys, Magic Bite and KFC at tHe Spring.

We would also like to thank Jackie Fong, Jo-Lynn Liao and the staff of Batik Boutique Hotel, Jacqueline Chin, Guru Besar Abot ak Singi, Cikgu Redan and the teachers and staff of SK Semban, Mr. Mering (Chairman of the Persatuan Ibu Bapa dan Guru) and the PIBG of SK Semban.

In all, Adopt-a-school 2011 (Phase 1 and 2) saw donations and sponsorship of cash and in kind totaling close to RM20,000. This in itself is a first for our club.

Donation to Tebedu Fire Victims

On 27th August 2011, fourteen shopshouses and a wooden house with 55 years of history in Tebedu old bazaar were completely burnt down 30 minutes after the fire started. The fire was seen coming from the 7th shophouse and the cause is believed to be a short circuit. The fire victims suffer a loss estimated at RM3 million.

According to the Kapitan there, the shopowners will have to be located to the new Tebedu township located few kilometres away and the old bazaar will not be rebuilt.

On the morning of 4th September 2011, the Lions in Region 1 led by Region Chairperson Ln Peter Ong made a trip to the old bazaar to hand over the donation for the fire victims to Kapitan Bong, with an amount of RM3,600 where RM2,000 is from District 308-A2 Foundation and the remaining from some Lions Clubs in Region 1. Our club made a contribution of RM200.

We woke at 7am to a cool, crisp morning. Low lying mist lingered on the ground.

We gathered at the school ground for the assembly. After Guru Besar Abot addressed the students, he invited Jackie to say a few words.

To give you an idea of the impact your kind donation has made: In the past, it takes about 1 week for the students and villagers to get a photocopy of their IC or birth cert. The process entails making a long trip down to the nearest town and generally, such a trip is only made once a week. Now, with the donated colour printer and scanner, they can do so immediately from the comfort of the school.

The school filled us up with a yummy breakfast and then we were off to Kpg. Semban.

Kpg. Semban is called "Village above the clouds". After the hike, I've decided to call it "Village of the never ending steps". We kept going up and up and up. Just when you thought you've reached the end of the steps, you turn a corner and there in front of you is another flight of steps.

It took us slower ones about 3 hours to hike from Kpg. Rejoi (where the school is) to Kpg. Semban. The villagers were warm and friendly and the view is certainly beautiful.

After the hearty lunch, we left on the last leg of our trip - the 5 hours walk downhill. We passed Kpg. Bojong along the way.

By the time we got back to our cars, the sun was just about to set.

In all, we hiked 13 hours in 2 days and met some truly wonderful people. A big thank you to all our supporters. You've made this project possible!

Day 1

Our journey started at 10^th Mile, where we met up with Batik Boutique Hotel’s group. From there, we made our way to Bengoh Dam construction site to begin our 2 days hike of Bungo mountain range where Kpg. Rejoi and SK Semban are situated.

We met up with Guru Besar Abot ak Singi and Cikgu Redan and the 6 porters. The porters are nothing short of Amazing! Looking at them loading their tambok with the boxes and boxes of the donated items left us speechless. And, they still managed to arrive at Kpg. Rejoi well ahead of us!

Our group of 17 started walking at about 1.55pm. As luck would have it, it was a sweltering 35˚ degree Celsius that day. On the other hand, the clear blue sky served as a wonderful backdrop to the view.

Off we go!

The hike took us up and down mountains, over bamboo bridges and through farm fields. After a brief lunch stop at Kpg. Taba Sait (not including all the other countless stops along the way), we continued on on our way to Kpg. Rejoi.

Finally, the sound of a diesel generator could be heard. After 5 hours of hiking, we finally arrived at Kpg. Rejoi. The school welcomed us with jugs of milo and water. Most of us were gulping down the liquid like fishes by then. We were then taken to our quarters for a much needed rest. The more energetic ones went to take a dip in the nearby river.

We were really touched by the school’s hospitality. Everyone - the Guru Besar, teachers, matron, cook, staff and even the students - pitched in to make us comfortable. After a wonderful dinner (sorry, no photos because I forgot to bring my camera to dinner), we set up the computers, printer and the other donation items in preparation for the school assembly and hand-over the next day. The electricity supply is so limited that they had to switch off all other electrical items just to have enough power to run the computers! Here in the city, we really take things for granted.

Once the preparation was done, we retired for the night : ) zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Background Info

This project was kick-started in partnership with Batik Boutique Hotel in February 2011. The project was essentially to supply some much needed items to the school SK Semban, located at Kpg. Rejoi, Bengoh. This primary school consists of 36 students at present and caters to the children from the surrounding villages like Kpg. Semban and Kpg. Rejoi.

There is no road to Kpg. Rejoi. You have trek through trails and over bamboo bridges to get there. For the members of the project entourage that went for the hand-over on 8-9.5.2011, we soon came to realize that it was no leisurely stroll.

Our club set up the stall at Kuching Civic Centre at 7 a.m. on 27th June morning. This time, we decided to sell fresh vegetables, supplied by our new member Louis Ng.

The sales started at around 7:30 a.m. and finished at 10:00 a.m..

Other stalls:

This is the first time we sold fresh vegetables. We managed to sell 54 kg of vegetables (including lettuce, wong kin pek, sawi, xiao bai chai) within 2.5 hours, and raised RM497 for KAA.

Special thanks to our member Louis for sponsoring the vege, to OC Kuek Hoon for arranging the transportation for the vege and to our members for waking up early to help up with the sales!!

It is time of the year again we give back to the society. This year’s Christmas, our club has again identified five families, through the help from Mr. Albert Pilai of Catholic Social Welfare, to carry out our once a year Touch-a-Life project.

Background of five selected families :

Donation items include:

1. Food stuffs/ necessity items : Rice, oil, noodles, milo, biscuits, toothpaste, bath soaps, laundry soaps, can food, salt, sugar, eggs, toilet rolls etc.
2. Cash donation (ang-pow) : RM100 per family (except Danny Kang’s family due to his parents were not around on the day).

Total Project Fund used : RM 1126.00 (Food items worth RM726 + Cash donation RM400)

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) patients under Persatuan SLE Malaysia (Kuching Chapter) had come together to organise Walk-a-Payung 2009 (WAP 2009), a 4-km walkathon with umbrellas, starting at 8.00am from the Amphitheatre in Jalan Budaya, Kuching, on Sunday, 13 December.

The objective of WAP 2009 was to raise public awareness of SLE as a disease where the body's immune system turns against its own tissues such as the joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels, and brain. About 90 percent of people with SLE are women, mainly in their childbearing years. The other 10% are men and children. Using the umbrella to walk is to create awareness that people with SLE have to avoid the sun.

Our club had the pleasure to be the sponsor for breakfast and drinks for this event. There were in total 175 participants registered and participated in the walk, including six members from our club and four FOLs.

A Climb upto Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, Mt. Matang

Driving according to the map, we reached Camp Mike as earliest group. While waiting for the others, SiawChing was busy surveying the compound and capturing a lot nice pictures. A natural fish pond on the ground beside our sitting area, Stones steps down the terrain to the pond, classic tun jugah cycle rickshaw, BBQ area, boat/kayak, ..etc. Natural view and relaxing. Theres a huge wind chime nearby the sitting area, giving beautiful sounds in the breeze. Definitely a very relaxing place to go. Theres also big lion paint in the house. Lots of interesting thing around.

Mike welcomed everyone and Cecil briefed everyone about the afternoon activity. Then, we were made to blindfold ourselves and follow own group leader in moving up the hill. We were surprise to see a small Indian temple/structure when we took off the blindfold. Our first stop.

Then, further up to second stop (w/o blindfold) until another indian structure. This where we saw a giant spider and enjoying the environment before we were blindfolded again?!

The blindfolded lion trekker finally reach the last stop. One by one "orang buta" Up the "Rumah Panjang" ladder to the Indian Temple. The scenery view plus the temple were amazing. We also discovered 2 lions among the statutes there. The trees and bush moving in the winds, sounds like ocean waves.
Weather later became more windy. Cecil told us time to head back, while picking up rubbish on the way down.

On the way down, we saw things we missed during blindfolding. Temple Donation Notice, all kinds of Floral, RTM radio station on a distance peak. Down the hill were weirdly long, windy, dark in that weather, more tiring with some loose rocks, even w/o blindfolding.

When we reached Camp Mike, the weather turned out to be okay. BBQ started by Mike's helper. Some went to kayaking/rafting in the pond. Some dramas of "captain abandon ship, perahu hit the bank, merry go round, floater drifting away from raft". Lots of fun and laugh. BBQ buffet later was indeed very nice. We heard that Kuching was raining, while we only felt a few drops/ drizzling during the whole trek and.

The evening ended with certification giving ceremony and phototaking. A trip that I would definitely recommended for anyone for an out-of-city break and relaxing yet enjoyable weekend, in safe activities and well built camp facilty done by Mike.

Lions Nursing Home Charity Food Fair - Pre-sale

The Lions clubs in Kuching and Serian are holding a food fair on the 15th Nov of 2009 to raise fund for the Lions Nursing Home. The fund is needed for the up-keep and running of the home. Your support really means a lot to us and the residents that rely on the services of the Home.

Our club will be selling fresh home-made mooncakes at RM12 per box (4 small size mooncake per box). There are 2 flavors to choose from, white lotus paste with melon seeds and mixed nuts.
